Pens

Your pens should be archival safe like your paper, even if your writing doesn't touch the photos. Choose pens that are acid-free and fade proof (pigment ink).

Ink Types

If you use glossy paper, you'll want a pen with pigment ink that dries quickly. I like (from the American Craft line) Slickwriters and Galaxy Markers. These pens dry almost instantly on almost any surface, including plastic.

For non-glossy paper, gel pens are fun to use. American Craft makes some that are full of glitter, which I also love. These take time to dry, however, and you should always test the pen before writing on your layout. For dark layouts, choose silver, gold or white to give your journaling elegance.

Versatile Brush Pens

Even if you've never done calligraphy, brush pens (try Impress or Tombow) can be a great investment. These pens are often double-tipped, with a brush on one side (perfect for inking stamps in various colors as well as calligraphy, filling in area and other effects) and a writing bullet on the other. I love the versatility my investment in these markers give me!

Journaling Notes

I have done some journaling on my computer to print on small blocks of acid-free paper or vellum (test the vellum for print capability first). This gives my pages a clean look. Keep in mind, though, even if you don't like your writing, it will add personality to your scrapbook. Keep some of yourself in every album!

Block Journaling

Are you afraid to write directly on your album pages? A great way to avoid mistakes is by using journaling blocks. This way, if you mess up while writing, just flip the block over. You can journal in advance, as well, and plan for these blocks on your layouts. Plus it makes your layouts look great.
