Paper
Requirements
Any product that touches your photograph must be photo-safe. Unfortunately,
there is no agency to regulate items termed photo-safe.
Acid-free
Paper high in acid will damage photos, causing them to become brittle
and faded. When choosing paper, choose ph-neutral or slightly alkaline
products.
Lignin-free
Lignin appears naturally in wood pulp and paper products unless removed.
When exposed to light, it causes yellowing.
Paper Weight and Photo Handling
If photos can be kept flat on the page, this will protect them
from cracking. I suggest standard 12x12 size. Choose the paper colors
and patterns according to your style. Vary textures and weights
in your layout for a dimensional look.
A Note on Colors and Patterns
There is nothing wrong with using coordinating colors and patterns
and combining these on your layout. I would caution you to stay
within the color group (for monochromatic layouts) or within the
color group and its complement. To soften the tone and make your
pictures "pop" out of the page (when readers see your book, you
want them to notice your photos first), mat your photos on white
(or black) paper before mounting. My film developer has an option
to include a white frame or border around the prints as well. I can highly recommend TAC™ exclusive prints and also Bazzill Basics for solid.
Vellum
Vellum is another tool you must have for a classic album. It adds
softness and character unlike any other paper. It tones down bright
colors and adds layers without adding bulk. When using it, be sure
to overlap it with other page elements to get its full effect. Attach
it with brads or eyelets, a Xyron machine, crystal clear adhesive,
or adhesive hidden behind photos or other items.
An even more effective neutral than black or white, kraft paper
is a must-have for your scrapbook supplies. Kraft paper gives you
a soft, versatile background often amiss from the harsh contrasts
of black or white, and it gives your album a warm feel. Its natural
uneven texture and speckles add interest.
Textured Paper
A great way to get more "umpf " in your layouts in a snap is to
add color-coordinated textured paper to your layouts. Mulberry
paper is a light-weight, soft paper that tears beautifully
when wet slightly with a Q-tip or water brush. Also consider heavier-weight
papers, like embossed or handmade varieties,
to add interest and dimension to your layouts. And for softer layouts,
try embroidered paper,
or even make your own!
