Think Ink... Your Choices

As if you didn't have enough to consider when getting started with stamping, you have to decide what kind of ink you want to use which projects. The types, colors, finishes and varieties available today are amazing and maybe a little overwhelming. This list gives you the basic differences and uses.

Dye Ink

Dye ink is an inexpensive fast-drying ink used in paper crafts. Traditionally, dye ink works best for porous papers, but recent innovations have allowed for easy use on smooth papers as well. I recommend dye ink for use in brayering and on mulberry paper. TAC™ Palette Hybrid ink is acid-free, water-resistant and archival quality, which means they are great for scrapbooks. For fun spectrum effects with a brayer, try Kaleidacolor multi-color pads.

Pigment Ink

When you need brighter colors, waterproof ink, embossability, or sparkle, pigment ink comes in handy. This permanent ink is typically longer-lasting than dye ink, and it takes longer to dry. Many finishes are available. Try the Versamagic™ chalk pads for a pastel-like finish. For the best bet on dark papers, or for metallic or pearlescent ink, try Brilliance pigment ink pads for a wonderful effect. Brilliance inks are also great for vellum, wood, clay, unglazed tile and more.

Craft Ink

When you're stamping on plastic, wood, fabric or leather, you might consider a craft ink. All Purpose ink comes in a jar for application with a brush. This is great for Krystal Kraft projects. Fabrico pads and markers are wonderful for fabric crafts, and can be heat-set in the dryer. StazOn solvent ink is a great product for all stamped items. This ink dries quickly on plastics, paper and even glass!

Embossing Ink and VersaMark

When you want a clear base for your embossed image, I recommend the use of an embossing ink. This super-slow drying ink gives you plenty of time to apply your embossing powder. VersaMark is also a great ink for embossing. In addition, you can use it alone (without heat-setting or embossing powder) to create watermark images, and it's available in a marker as well as an ink pad.
